Review What Had Happened Was
Okay, so let me tell you, "What Had Happened Was: Hoe Season" is a total blast! If you loved the first book in the series, you're absolutely going to devour this one. It's got that same hilarious, relatable energy, but the drama is cranked up to eleven! Seriously, Ah'Shay Young really outdid herself with this sequel. The whole thing feels like a wild ride with your best friends – the kind where you're laughing so hard you cry, then gasping at the next unexpected twist.
Toi, Dena, and Kēssa are back, and they're just as chaotic and wonderfully flawed as ever. I’ve gotta admit, Toi's internal monologue is pure gold. She's such an overthinker, but that's part of what makes her so endearing. You can totally relate to her dating struggles and questionable choices. She’s honestly the kind of friend you’d want by your side, navigating the messy world of dating and friendships, even if she occasionally drives you crazy.
Speaking of friends, Dena is a total queen. Loyal, hilarious, and always there to keep things interesting. She’s the kind of friend everyone needs – the one who’ll hold your hair back while you’re throwing up from too many margaritas, but also the one who’ll call you out on your BS with no hesitation. She’s the anchor in this storm of a story, which is why I actually enjoyed her part the most. She's just fantastic! Kēssa...well, let's just say she's...different. I found her character less captivating in comparison to the other two.
The book really shines in its depiction of female friendships. It’s about the messy, complicated, and utterly hilarious reality of navigating life with your ride-or-dies. The bond between Toi, Dena, and Kēssa is palpable; you feel their history, their inside jokes, their unwavering support (even when they're driving each other insane). The whole story is just incredibly well-written and relatable.
And the dating escapades? Don't even get me started! Toi's "hoe season" is a whirlwind of questionable decisions, hilarious encounters, and some seriously cringeworthy moments. It's so ridiculously funny and at times, painfully familiar. You'll be cringing, laughing, and cheering her on all at the same time.
The author masterfully balances the humor with moments of genuine emotional depth. You connect with these characters; you feel their triumphs and their heartbreaks. It's a captivating story that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. I literally couldn't put it down! I pre-ordered this book because I couldn’t wait, and honestly, I think the author might have been spying on my friend group and me! It's that realistic. If you're looking for a fun, lighthearted read with characters you’ll instantly fall in love with (and maybe some characters you'll love to hate!), then absolutely grab this book. And honestly, I'm already eagerly awaiting the next installment! Bring on the next chapter in their crazy lives!
